The Future Of Portable Projectors
What is noticeable in today's high tech world are the electronic products evolving into smaller physical dimensions, but with high-end features. Look at the new models of cell phones around, the PDAs, digital cameras and other portable devices - don't they seem to physically shrink in size, and only a finite amount of data can be displayed? There is just not enough room for all these data to be displayed. In the near future, there may just be portable projectors that would do the job. At Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratory, a mini-projector was made with size just as big as a pencil. This is envisioned to be the future of portable projectors. During a demonstration, the portable projector prototype made use of four red lights taped to the wall as reference. The projector was aimed in the middle of these red lights. As the projection was beamed, four lasers, two on each side of the projector, shone red lights just beyond the corner of the projected image. A camera, attached on the top of the device, looks at all 8 red lights in order to have a stable display of the projection. A future improvement would be making use of a wall's landmarks instead of the four taped red lights or markers. When attached to a computer, the portable projector prototype can beam out images even on non-planar walls and even on walls which have more than one color. A total of four prototype portable projectors attached to computer can display larges images than when only one portable prototype projector is used. The computer, attached with cameras and with the use of computer algorithms, determines which of the four prototype portable projectors would face where, and what piece of the picture it should project. The computer handles the adjustment of the non-planar surface where the projection is beamed, and adjusts as well for the color of the surface to produce a correct image display. Incorporating other technologies such as cameras and wireless communication tools to that of the prototype portable projectors technology, one could only imagine what new applications may come up. With the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology thrown in as well, the possibilities are limitless. One can never know what new innovations technology may bring, and the portable projectors technology seem not to lag behind. This evolution will definitely change the way portable projectors work, and people will soon experience its benefits. |
